Accident – Death – Obituary News :

An American woman, known as Cherish, was reportedly deceived by shopkeepers in India into purchasing cheap gold-plated jewellery for a staggering Rs60 million (£563,000; $718,000).

Cherish made the purchase at a store located in Johri Bazar, Rajasthan, around two years ago. The shop provided her with a hallmark certificate that supposedly verified the purity of the jewellery at the time of sale.

Upon returning to the US and showcasing the jewellery at an exhibition, Cherish discovered that it was actually a counterfeit piece valued at no more than Rs300 (£2.82; $4). This revelation prompted her to travel back to India to confront the shopkeeper, Gaurav Soni.

The accused shopkeepers, Gaurav Soni and his father Rajendra Soni, have refuted the allegations made by Cherish.

Following the incident, Cherish sought assistance from the US embassy to file a formal police complaint against the jewellers. The complaint led to an investigation by Jaipur police, which revealed that the jewellery contained moonstones instead of diamonds and had only two carats of gold content instead of the claimed 14 carats.

Additionally, the shopkeepers accused Cherish of stealing jewellery from their store, but this claim was disproven after reviewing CCTV footage.

Despite the jewellers being at large, authorities have arrested Nandkishore, who issued the fraudulent hallmark certificate. Special investigative teams have been formed to locate Gaurav Soni and Rajendra Soni.

Jaipur police’s deputy chief, Bajrang Singh Shekhawat, stated that several other complaints of fraud against Gaurav Soni and Rajendra Soni have been received and are currently being investigated.

Cherish, who initially connected with the Sonis through Instagram in 2022, expressed her dismay at being duped by the jewellers. She claimed that they had consistently deceived her by sending lower-quality jewellery than what was promised, including nine-carat and gold-plated items instead of the 14-carat pieces she had ordered.

Furthermore, Cherish alleged that the jewellers had substituted natural diamonds with moonstones in the jewellery they supplied to her, alongside providing fake certificates to deceive customers.
