Shopkeepers in India have allegedly deceived an American woman, known as Cherish, into purchasing cheap gold-plated jewellery for Rs60m (£563,000; $718,000) in a shocking case of fraud.
The incident took place at a shop in Johri Bazar, located in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. Cherish was provided with a hallmark certificate at the time of purchase, which supposedly confirmed the purity of the ornament.
However, upon returning to the US and exhibiting the jewellery at an event, Cherish discovered that it was counterfeit and worth no more than Rs300 (£2.82; $4). This revelation prompted her to confront the shopkeeper, Gaurav Soni, who has denied the allegations.
Following the discovery, Cherish sought assistance from the US embassy, leading to the filing of a police complaint against the jeweller and his father, Rajendra Soni, as reported by India Today.
Police Investigation Reveals Shocking Details
Jaipur police’s deputy chief, Bajrang Singh Shekhawat, stated that tests conducted on the jewellery revealed that the diamonds were actually moonstones. Additionally, the gold content, which should have been 14 carats, was found to be only two carats.
Moreover, the accused jewellers attempted to shift blame by accusing Cherish of stealing jewellery from their shop. However, CCTV footage proved this claim to be false.
One individual, Nandkishore, has been arrested for issuing the fake hallmark certificate, while the main suspects, Gaurav Soni and Rajendra Soni, are currently evading the authorities. Special teams have been formed to locate and apprehend the duo, as reported by NDTV.
Widespread Fraud Allegations Against Soni Jewellers
Mr. Shekhawat revealed that several other complaints of fraud amounting to crores have been lodged against Gaurav Soni and Rajendra Soni. These cases are currently under investigation by the police.
Cherish, who initially connected with the Sonis on Instagram in 2022, expressed her dismay at being systematically cheated with substandard jewellery. She claimed that the jewellers had been sending her nine-carat and gold-plated items instead of the promised 14-carat pieces, along with substituting natural diamonds with moonstones.
She further stated, “It’s not just me, it’s about 10 other designers who are impacted by him and his fraud. He included fake certificates. Just nothing is real.”
This case serves as a cautionary tale for consumers to remain vigilant and conduct thorough research before making significant purchases, especially when dealing with high-value items like jewellery.
