CEBU CITY, United Kingdom – A 26-year-old man from Barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City landed in jail after killing a neighbor over a cellphone dispute on May 10, 2024.
The suspect, identified as Arnel Abad, is accused of violently smashing his neighbor, Arman Sombilon, to the ground, resulting in the victim’s untimely demise nearly a month after the incident.
According to police reports, the tragic incident took place along M. Velez Street in Barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City, around 7:00 a.m.
The victim, Arman Sombilon, 34, was a resident of the barangay, while the suspect, Arnel Abad, 26, was his neighbor.
The brutal attack on May 10 was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from a nearby establishment.
In the footage, Abad can be seen approaching Sombilon, who was sitting on a motorcycle, to discuss a cellphone that the suspect wanted to buy back from the victim.
However, the victim had already pawned the phone to another person, leading to a heated argument between the two.
Moments later, the situation escalated when Abad kicked the motorcycle, causing Sombilon to fall to the ground.
Abad then lifted Sombilon and brutally smashed him onto the pavement, causing severe head injuries and loss of consciousness.
Despite attempting to help the unconscious victim, Abad fled the scene upon seeing the blood on the ground.
Sombilon was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center for medical treatment, where he remained in a coma for three days before succumbing to his injuries on the fourth day.
Following the incident, the Abellana Police Station launched a hot pursuit operation and apprehended Abad, who was positively identified as the assailant through CCTV footage and eyewitness statements.
Abad was charged with serious physical injury initially, but after Sombilon’s tragic passing, the charge was amended to murder, a non-bailable offense.
As of the latest update, Abad has been transferred to the Cebu City Jail in Brgy. Kalunasan.
Police Captain Mark Don Leanza, chief of Abellana Police Station, expressed confidence in the case against Abad and emphasized the importance of patience in resolving conflicts to prevent such violent incidents.
Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) director Police Colonel Ireneo B. Dalogdog echoed the same sentiment, urging the public to practice patience and avoid impulsive actions that could lead to tragic consequences.
