Baltimore Police have released body camera footage of a fatal encounter that took place last month at a business in South Baltimore’s Fairfield Area. The incident led to the death of a man and left a police officer wounded.
The video, which contains graphic content and profanity, shows a group of officers approaching the man, identified as 39-year-old Anthony Ferguson. The encounter took place on May 24, when officers confronted Ferguson over an incident that occurred four days prior, during which he reportedly discharged a gun. Ferguson, who was at work and on a break when approached by officers at around 10:25 p.m., eventually pulled out a handgun from his waistband and exchanged gunfire with the officers.
Officer Injured and Suspect Fatally Shot
During the shootout, an officer, identified as Detective Nicholas Wellems, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Ferguson was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The Baltimore Police, in conjunction with the Maryland attorney general’s office’s Independent Investigations Division, are currently investigating the shooting that occurred on the 3400 block of South Hanover Street. The police department released the footage to the media after presenting it at a news conference held on Wednesday.
Officers Involved and Administrative Leave
Five officers, including Detective Wellems, are currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The other officers involved in the incident are Brandall Mable, Nicolas Sturla, Kevin Retamale, and Sgt. Timothy Copeland.
During the encounter, Officer Copeland can be heard asking Ferguson about the gun, to which Ferguson denies having one. However, as officers search his backpack and ask him to lift his shirt, Ferguson reaches for his waistband and pulls out a gun, leading to the exchange of gunfire.
Police Commissioner’s Statement
Deputy Police Commissioner Brian Nadeau, who oversees the department’s Public Integrity and Compliance Bureau, mentioned that the officers fired a total of 39 rounds in response to Ferguson’s three shots from a handgun with an extended magazine.
Police Commissioner Richard Worley highlighted the importance of Officer Wellems’ bulletproof vest, which saved his life during the incident. Worley mentioned, “The gunshot that struck him hit him in his vest … If his vest isn’t there, it goes into his heart, it probably kills him.”
Officer Wellems, who was treated on the evening of the shooting, is currently recovering from his injuries.
