BALTIMORE — Recently released body camera footage has shed light on the tragic events that unfolded during a shootout in South Baltimore. The incident took place on May 24 in the 3400 block of S. Hanover Street, where 39-year-old Anthony Ferguson was found seated outside.
Ferguson had been identified as a person of interest in a prior shooting that occurred just two days earlier. When officers approached him and inquired about any weapons, Ferguson disregarded their questions.
Subsequently, Ferguson stood up, retrieved a firearm from his waistband, and aimed it at the officers. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Ferguson engaged in gunfire with five officers, resulting in his tragic demise.
During the exchange, one officer sustained a gunshot wound to his bulletproof vest. Both Ferguson and the injured officer were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, Ferguson succumbed to his injuries, while the officer’s condition was reported as non-life-threatening.
The officers involved in the altercation have been identified as Sergeant Timothy Copeland, Detective Nicholas Wellems, and Officers Brandall Mable, Nicolas Sturla, and Kevin Retamales. A firearm was recovered from Ferguson at the scene of the incident.
