Crews in Thiensville have recovered the body of a man who went missing in the Milwaukee River on Wednesday night, June 5.

The deceased has been identified as 52-year-old Aleksandr “Alex” Melnikov from Mequon, whose body was found on June 7.

On the evening of June 5, a witness reported to the Thiensville Police Department that Melnikov had entered the Milwaukee River in an attempt to rescue his chocolate Labrador, who had been carried downstream and over the Village Park dam.

Emergency response teams from the Southern Ozaukee Fire Department, Port Washington Fire Department, and the Milwaukee Dive Team were immediately dispatched to the dam location, but unfortunately, they were unable to locate Melnikov.

Search efforts continued along the river, with wardens from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources eventually discovering and retrieving Melnikov’s body on Friday, June 7.

Authorities have confirmed that the chocolate Labrador is still missing and efforts are ongoing to locate the beloved pet.
