A 16-year-old is fighting for their life in hospital after being struck by a vehicle while cycling in Sumerduck on Monday afternoon, according to a recent news release from the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Silver Hill Road and Silver Hill Court, where a 911 call was placed to the Fauquier County Emergency Communications Center at approximately 2:33 p.m. The teenager was riding their bike with family members when they were hit by a vehicle driven by a 79-year-old woman who remained at the scene following the accident.
At present, no charges have been brought against the driver as the investigation into the incident is still ongoing. The victim was airlifted to Fairfax Hospital after a helicopter landing zone was set up at nearby Mary Walter Elementary School.
While authorities were securing the area, a 53-year-old man from Sumerduck, identified as Mark Manning, allegedly disregarded a deputy’s instructions and drove through the crash site. Manning was subsequently arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and crossing established police lines. He is currently being held on a $2,000 secured bond.
