Travis Taurean Martin : “Police Release Names in Fatal Shooting”

In a recent development, the Roanoke Police Department has disclosed the names of the officers who were involved in the tragic shooting incident that resulted in the death of a suspect. The officers in question have been identified as Sergeant M. Mulligan, a seasoned veteran with twelve years of service, and Officer J. Coles, who has been serving for five years.

The deceased individual has been identified as Travis Taurean Martin, a 41-year-old resident of Roanoke. The fatal incident took place on Hershberger Road on June 8, 2024, where Martin lost his life following a confrontation with law enforcement officials.

Roanoke Police Chief Scott Booth expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, acknowledging the profound impact of any loss of life on the community. Chief Booth also reassured the public that the investigation into the incident is being handled by the Virginia State Police with the utmost professionalism and fairness.

Following standard protocol, both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation unfolds. This is a routine procedure to ensure transparency and accountability in such cases, according to police officials.

The chain of events leading up to the fatal encounter began when Roanoke Police responded to reports of a man making threatening remarks towards officers outside the police department. Subsequently, the individual, later identified as Martin, also made a 911 call threatening violence against law enforcement personnel.

After causing damage to a police vehicle in a neighbouring jurisdiction, Martin was located at a business establishment in the Valley View area. Officers then proceeded to track his movements, eventually leading to a confrontation on Hershberger Road.

During a traffic stop on the 2900 block of Hershberger Road, Martin allegedly brandished a weapon, believed to be an axe or hatchet, and began advancing towards the officers. In response to the perceived threat, the officers discharged their firearms, resulting in Martin’s tragic demise at the scene.
