Accident – Death – Obituary News : CASPER — The individual who was fatally shot during a confrontation with Casper police on Thursday has been identified as Trae Stewart Spurlock, a 26-year-old local resident. Spurlock allegedly attempted to wrestle control of an officer’s firearm during the altercation with police, leading to his tragic demise.

The incident took place a little after 9:30 p.m. when the Casper Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex in the 5000 block of Pay It Forward Drive. As officers attempted to apprehend Spurlock, he purportedly made a move to seize a firearm from one of the officers, resulting in the fatal shooting, as reported by CPD.

The Natrona County Coroner’s Office has officially confirmed Spurlock as the deceased individual in the altercation, but has refrained from disclosing further details at this time. The office has discredited a report by the Casper Star-Tribune, which allegedly contained inaccurate information regarding the number of shots fired at Spurlock, the type of ammunition used, and the specific location of the gunshot wounds on his body.

Lead Detective Taylor Jessee of the Natrona County Coroner’s Office has explicitly stated that the aforementioned details were not part of any preliminary coroner’s report released by their office. Jessee neither confirmed nor denied the accuracy of the information published by the Star-Tribune.

“The Casper Star Tribune absolutely did not get that information from us,” Jessee stated in response to an information request from Cowboy State Daily. “There has been one press release released from our office that can be found on our website. No further information will be shared at this time.”

Although a press release from the Coroner’s Office identified Spurlock as the deceased individual, it did not provide any additional information regarding the circumstances of his death. Consequently, Cowboy State Daily has refrained from reporting on unverified details surrounding Spurlock’s demise.

Coroner James Whipps has reiterated that any additional information regarding the incident will be released by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) when deemed appropriate. In line with CPD protocol for officer-involved shootings, the investigation has been handed over to DCI for further scrutiny.

Brad Reinhart, the Team Leader at Casper’s DCI office, declined to disclose any additional information, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. “It is an active investigation, and I am not going to confirm anything,” Reinhart asserted.
