Accident – Death – Obituary News :

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An 80-year-old man, Terry Leggett, is facing charges after crashing a vehicle into the front of a Publix store in the Lakeshore area on Wednesday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police responded to the Publix located at 4495 Roosevelt Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon following reports of a traffic crash. Upon arrival, officers found Terry Leggett sitting in the front seat of the vehicle involved in the incident.

According to the arrest report, officers observed that Leggett had bloodshot, watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Despite denying consuming any alcohol that day, a DUI test was conducted on Leggett, which revealed “multiple indicators of impairment.”

Furthermore, officers discovered a half-empty bottle of vodka inside the vehicle that Leggett was driving at the time of the crash. As a result, Leggett was arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, DUI with damage to property, careless driving, and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

The crash resulted in heavy damage to a pillar located on the front of the Publix store, with the vehicle’s airbags deploying upon impact. Leggett claimed that he slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting two pedestrians in the parking lot, causing him to collide with a wall.

A tow truck driver at the scene reported to police that he witnessed Leggett “drinking some type of liquor” prior to the crash, corroborating the suspicions of impaired driving.

Publix management requested that the vehicle not be towed immediately out of concern that the pillar might collapse once it was removed. The store manager mentioned hearing a loud “boom” at the time of the incident.

Leggett is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to face the charges brought against him. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the potential consequences of impaired decisions behind the wheel.

Conclusion

As the legal proceedings continue, it is essential for all individuals to prioritize safety on the road and refrain from engaging in activities that may jeopardize their well-being and that of others. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
