The Phoenix Police Department released a video containing body-worn camera footage from one of the two officers involved in the incident. Two officers on patrol stopped a man on a bicycle for a traffic violation, later identified as 46-year-old Sergio Francisco Alvarez.
Upon approaching Alvarez, the suspect reportedly became combative, leading to a physical struggle between him and the officers. During the scuffle, Alvarez allegedly produced a handgun and fired at one of the officers, hitting him in the leg. The wounded officer, in a dramatic turn of events, returned fire, striking Alvarez multiple times.

Authorities recovered the handgun used by Alvarez at the scene of the incident. The officers involved, both serving in the South Mountain Precinct and possessing roughly three years of experience with the department, are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
