A body discovered on a used car lot in Laurel, Mississippi, may belong to a woman who went missing after crashing her car, according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.
The grim discovery was made on Monday, June 10, at Luis Auto Sales on Highway 184 in Laurel. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit was called in to assist in the investigation.
Authorities found the remains in the trunk of a vehicle on the lot, with Sheriff Joe Berlin stating that they believe it may be connected to the disappearance of 32-year-old Samantha Elisabeth McCowan.

McCowan was last seen around 1 a.m. on Friday, June 7, after her car crashed near Mississippi Highway 184. Authorities mentioned that she walked away from the crash and has not been seen since. Her cell phone was found inside the car, and there has been no electronic communication from her since the incident.
State and local agencies, including Mississippi Emergency Management, conducted extensive searches over the weekend but were unable to locate the missing woman. Authorities also requested residents and businesses in the area to check their security cameras for any potential sightings of McCowan.
As of June 11, the body found on the used car lot has not been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.
Laurel is approximately a 90-mile drive southeast from downtown Jackson.
