Authorities in Taipei, Taiwan, are currently conducting an investigation into how an alleged former officer of the Chinese navy managed to sail a small boat into a strategically important river mouth that leads to the capital of the self-governing island republic.
The small boat was initially detected off the coast, but it was not intercepted until it began causing disruptions to ferry traffic across the Tamsui River. This river originates from the mountains of inner Taiwan and flows into the Taiwan Strait, which separates Taiwan and China, following their split during a civil war in 1949.
The pilot of the boat has been identified as a 60-year-old former officer in the People’s Liberation Army Navy of China, with the surname Ruan, according to the official Central News Agency. This development has raised questions about whether the voyage was a deliberate attempt to test Taiwan’s detection and defense capabilities, amidst increasing threats from China to take control of the island, which it considers as part of its territory.
The Taiwan Strait serves as a crucial passage for global trade, but it is also renowned for its challenging winds and tides. This has led to speculation about how the small boat managed to reach its destination – whether it navigated the waters from the Chinese coast independently or was launched from a larger vessel.
In recent years, transportation links between Taiwan and China have been reinstated; however, the ruling Communist Party of China maintains strict limitations on the travel of both current and former officials.
