YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Yuma Police Department (YPD) have apprehended two individuals in connection with the tragic accidental shooting of a 19-year-old man in the city.
According to a recent statement released by YPD, the incident took place at 3:07 p.m. on Monday at the intersection of South 3rd Avenue and East 20th Street. The authorities were alerted to the situation following reports of an accidental shooting in the vicinity.
Upon arrival at the scene, YPD officers interviewed a 23-year-old male who claimed that the fatal shot was discharged while he was cleaning his rifle. The victim, identified as Raymond Ruiz, succumbed to his injuries as a result of the incident.
However, further investigation by YPD revealed that another 19-year-old individual had been handling the firearm recklessly, leading to the tragedy. The suspect fled the scene following the shooting but surrendered himself to authorities at approximately 7:30 p.m. on the same day. The suspect was promptly taken into custody without any resistance and has since been charged with second-degree murder and disorderly conduct with a weapon.
In a subsequent development, the 23-year-old man who initially reported the incident was also arrested and charged with hindering prosecution and false reporting.
YPD has confirmed that the next of kin of Raymond Ruiz have been notified of his untimely passing.
