PLAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) – Two men are facing charges following an incident where a driver crashed into a Stark County sheriff’s cruiser and led authorities on a short chase on Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred at around 7 a.m. when a Stark County sheriff’s deputy was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Middlebranch Avenue and Schneider Street NE in Plain Township, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Reports indicate that a 2017 Ford Focus rear-ended the sheriff’s cruiser. The driver of the Ford attempted to flee on foot after the collision but was quickly apprehended by law enforcement.

The driver, identified as Nickolas Hamilton, a 30-year-old resident of Louisville, has been charged with several offenses including operating a vehicle while intoxicated, assured clear distance, driving under suspension, failure to stop after an accident, and possession of drug abuse instruments.

Authorities also discovered that Hamilton had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest. In addition to the driver, a passenger in the vehicle, identified as Robert Pinkerton, a 55-year-old from Canton, was arrested for various outstanding warrants and obstruction of justice.

Both the sheriff’s deputy and the suspects involved in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at local hospitals before being taken into custody. Hamilton and Pinkerton were later transported to the Stark County Jail.
