Accident – Death – Obituary News :

An Elma driver, Matthew Geiger, is facing charges of vehicular homicide after allegedly causing a tragic three-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of 46-year-old Jesse Schweickert, a Buckley man. The incident occurred on June 5 on State Route 410 at State Route 167 near Sumner, according to court documents.

The collision took place around 4:20 a.m., as reported in a previous News Tribune story. Washington State Patrol troopers responded to the scene where they found a Chevrolet Blazer SUV overturned, a white Ford nearby, and a Honda Pilot partially in the bushes.

According to charging documents, the driver of the Ford stated that she was travelling westbound on State Route 410 when a vehicle came down the embankment towards her. She witnessed two vehicles in front of her colliding, leaving her with no time to react.

At the scene, Geiger, the alleged driver responsible for the crash, was found wandering around in a dazed and confused state. The trooper noted that his speech was slurred, and Geiger claimed to have no recollection of the events. Schweickert was discovered slumped over in his Honda, with severe injuries that proved fatal.

Investigations revealed that Geiger was travelling north on State Route 167 before veering off the road and colliding with Schweickert’s Honda, which was heading west on State Route 410. The impact occurred as the Honda was taking the southbound exit onto State Route 167. Subsequently, the Ford driven by the witness collided with Geiger’s vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Geiger’s erratic behaviour and inability to provide a coherent account of the events raised suspicions of impairment. Charging documents indicated that he exhibited bloodshot and watery eyes, and a preliminary breath test revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.157, almost twice the legal limit in Washington.

Following the crash, Geiger was apprehended and taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of driving under the influence and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives.

Stay tuned for further updates as the case progresses through the legal system.
