Marwa Hashim, who arrived in Australia in 2017 to work as an architect before transitioning to a senior planner role at Transport for NSW, and Nirsha Haris, a former public relations professional, were unable to be revived despite the efforts of emergency responders. Marwa’s sister, Roshna Hashim, was also swept away but managed to make it back to safety with the help of bystanders. She sustained minor injuries and was treated for hypothermia at St George Hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.
The Sydney Malayalee Association, representing an ethnic group from Kerala, India, confirmed the heartbreaking news of the women’s deaths on social media.
