Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Indian community in Sydney is reeling from the tragic loss of two beloved mothers who were swept away by a powerful wave while enjoying a picnic with their families. Marwa Hashim, 35, and Nirsha Haris, 38, were identified as the victims of the incident that occurred at Cape Solander in Sydney’s south. The two women, who were best friends as well as mothers, were walking along a rock shelf with a group of five when the unexpected wave hit, dragging them into the ocean.

Marwa Hashim, who arrived in Australia in 2017 to work as an architect before transitioning to a senior planner role at Transport for NSW, and Nirsha Haris, a former public relations professional, were unable to be revived despite the efforts of emergency responders. Marwa’s sister, Roshna Hashim, was also swept away but managed to make it back to safety with the help of bystanders. She sustained minor injuries and was treated for hypothermia at St George Hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.

The Sydney Malayalee Association, representing an ethnic group from Kerala, India, confirmed the heartbreaking news of the women’s deaths on social media. The community is now rallying together to support the families of the deceased and has called on the Australian government to assist in arranging visas for their relatives to attend the funerals.

The tragic incident has prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation, with three rescue helicopters deployed to locate the missing women. Rabih Yassinne, a bystander hailed as a hero, helped rescue Roshna from the water after Marwa’s husband sought assistance. NSW Police Marine Area Command Superintendent Joe McNulty expressed his condolences to the families and emphasized the dangers posed by the powerful waves at Cape Solander.

As investigations continue into the incident, authorities have urged beachgoers to exercise caution and stay vigilant near the water. Cape Solander, known for its stunning views and whale-watching opportunities, has now become the site of a crime scene as the investigation unfolds. While no suspicious circumstances have been identified at this time, a report will be prepared for the coroner to determine the cause of the tragedy..
