Accident – Death – Obituary News : In a tragic incident that took place in Puducherry on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, two women and a 15-year-old girl lost their lives due to the inhalation of toxic gases in Pudhu Nagar, Reddiyarpalayam. The victims were identified as Senthamarai, 72, her daughter Kamatchi, 55, and their neighbour Selvarani, 15.

The unfortunate event unfolded in the early hours of the morning when Senthamarai went to the bathroom and reportedly inhaled toxic gases, causing her to faint. Kamatchi, upon checking on her mother, also fell victim to the same fate. Shortly after, Selvarani, who resided in an adjacent house, experienced a similar ordeal after inhaling toxic fumes in her own bathroom.

The Reddiyarpalayam police and Fire and Rescue Services were quick to respond to the emergency, rushing the victims to the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute. Tragically, Senthamarai and Kamatchi succumbed to the toxic gases en route to the hospital, while Selvarani passed away shortly after being admitted.

Following the incident, the police cordoned off 4th Cross Road where the tragedy occurred and urged all residents to evacuate the area. Additionally, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and Minister for Public Works K. Lakshminarayanan visited the site to assess the situation. They announced a solatium of ₹30 lakh for Selvarani’s next of kin and ₹20 lakh each for Senthamarai and Kamatchi’s families.

Leader of the Opposition, R. Siva, who also inspected the scene, raised concerns about the poor maintenance of the sewage treatment plant (STP) at Kanagan Eri. He highlighted the inadequacies of the STP in treating the substantial volume of waste generated and the reported leaks in the underground drainage system in Pudhu Nagar.

In response to the incident, an inquiry has been launched by the Public Works Department to investigate the cause of the gas leak and assess the overall condition of the drainage system. Residents have expressed frustration over the continuous discharge of untreated water and sludge from the STP, emphasizing the urgent need for repairs and maintenance.

The tragic loss of lives in Puducherry has underscored the critical importance of proper infrastructure maintenance and safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Puducherry government has been urged to take immediate action to address the issues raised and ensure the well-being of its residents..
