COCOA, Fla. – A man is facing a potential 30-year prison sentence for leaving the scene of a crash that tragically took the life of a 4-year-old and left a 14-year-old severely injured in Cocoa.
Kenneth McGhee voluntarily surrendered himself to the Cocoa Police Department last Friday and was able to post a $30,000 bond over the weekend. The harrowing incident occurred on May 26th around 9 p.m., and authorities swiftly identified McGhee as the primary suspect shortly after he allegedly fled the scene.
According to Cocoa police, the hit-and-run incident occurred at the intersection of Washington and State Road 520, where the children were attempting to cross the street. They had made it halfway when one of them dropped their phone, leading to the tragic collision, investigators revealed.
After striking the children, the driver fled the scene, only to call the police 15 minutes later to admit to the incident. Frantic 911 calls from witnesses directed authorities to a bustling intersection off U.S. Highway 1 in Cocoa, where they discovered the two children left injured on the road.
“The four-year-old tragically succumbed to their injuries two days later, while the 14-year-old is left with injuries that will likely have a lasting impact on her life,” stated Yvonne Martinez, the public information officer for the Cocoa Police Department.
Initially, Cocoa police had limited information to work with, only possessing a description of the vehicle involved. However, 15 minutes following the crash, they received a call from a man who identified himself as Kenneth McGhee, inquiring if anyone had reported an accident. He then confessed to the authorities, stating, “I think I did it,” as documented in his charges.
“Had he simply stopped to provide assistance, the situation would have been far different. Perhaps the children’s fates would have been altered as well,” Martinez lamented.

McGhee’s legal counsel advised him to turn himself in to the police last Friday, and he has since been released on bond. FOX 35 reporter Esther Bower attempted to reach out to him at his residence for a statement, but he was not present. Instead, she encountered an individual who claimed to have known him for years.
“To discover that someone I have personally socialised with is involved in such a tragedy is truly shocking,” the acquaintance expressed. “If you believed you had struck someone, why did you not stop immediately and seek assistance?”
McGhee could potentially face a 30-year prison sentence for fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in death and bodily harm.
“It is a heart-wrenching and devastating situation for everyone implicated,” the suspect’s friend concluded.
Subsequent to the tragic incident, an online petition has been launched urging for enhanced lighting and improved crosswalks at the intersection where the children lost their lives. Authorities stated that they are continuously collaborating with the Florida Department of Transportation to enhance safety measures, with State Road 520 being a primary focus due to the high pedestrian traffic.
