NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – Authorities have confirmed that a Minneapolis police officer who tragically lost his life while on duty last month was originally from New Haven.
Officer Jamal Mitchell was fatally shot in an ambush on May 30 while responding to a shots fired call in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis. The incident took place without warning, with the suspect, identified as Mustafa Mohamed, opening fire on Officer Mitchell as he attempted to assist a man in distress.
The body of Officer Mitchell is set to arrive at Bradley Airport at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A solemn procession will be conducted by members of the CT State Police and New Haven Police, including the Motor Unit and Honor Guard, to escort the family of Officer Mitchell and a delegation of officers from Minneapolis to the McClam Funeral Home in New Haven.
Funeral arrangements for Officer Mitchell have been scheduled for Monday, June 17, at the Hillhouse High School Floyd Little Athletic Center. Viewing hours will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a service commencing at 11. The final resting place for Officer Mitchell will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
