Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 32-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is set to appear in court for sentencing on August 14 after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography. Gregory Pearce was arrested as part of Project Maverick, a province-wide crackdown on child exploitation that resulted in the arrest of 107 suspects across 27 police agencies.

According to assistant Crown attorney Gary Knox, police seized a laptop and an iPhone from Pearce’s east-end residence in September 2022. Upon examination, authorities discovered 352 images and 579 videos of child pornography depicting explicit sexual activity on the devices. The offences took place between February 15, 2021, and August 31, 2022.

Project Maverick was initiated following a tip-off from the National Child Exploitation Crime Centre, which identified an individual uploading explicit material. Upon further investigation, law enforcement found a significant amount of pornography involving pre-pubescent males linked to Pearce.

Due to the nature of the charges, sentencing for Pearce was postponed to allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report. Ontario Court Justice Melanie Dunn will oversee the proceedings.

Child exploitation remains a pressing issue in society, and initiatives like Project Maverick aim to combat such crimes and hold offenders accountable. The collaborative effort of multiple police agencies highlights the commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring justice is served.
