A woman in Louisiana is recovering in the hospital after being viciously mauled by a man’s dog while trying to help him with some money, according to her daughters.
The incident occurred on June 2 when 64-year-old Elsa Davila was out grocery shopping near the Sulphur Plaza. She encountered a man with a dog who was asking for money, as reported by KPLC.
According to Davila’s daughters, she kindly offered the man some money, but as she was walking away, the dog broke free from its leash and launched a brutal attack on her.
Davila was rushed to a hospital in New Orleans where she underwent plastic surgery to treat the severe injuries sustained on her face and stomach. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with her recovery.
The daughters, Savanna Gonzales and Michelle Garcia, witnessed the devastating effects of the attack on their mother. Garcia described the sight as “the worst thing I’ve ever seen” and mentioned that Davila is currently on a liquid diet and unable to speak due to her injuries.
The man responsible for the dog, identified as 37-year-old Kyle Smith, is now facing charges including trespassing, cruelty to animals, and unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog.
Garcia, who works at a nearby store, revealed that the dog had caused issues in the past and had to be relocated off the premises due to its aggressive behavior towards customers.
Despite the traumatic experience, Davila’s daughters describe her as a resilient and caring individual. They mentioned that she is currently dealing with nightmares of being chased by a dog but remains in high spirits.
The dog involved in the attack, reported to be a pit bull-mix, is currently held at Sulphur Animal Control.
