Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A hiker in Utah tragically lost her life after being swept away by strong water currents at Horsetail Falls, according to a statement from the Utah County’s Sheriff’s Office. The victim, identified as Cynthia Ann Grimwood, 19, from Springville, was found lifeless below the waterfall after a harrowing ordeal.

The incident unfolded when two hikers stumbled upon a small dog carrying a cell phone and personal belongings that raised suspicions. Concerned that someone may have fallen into the water, the hikers promptly alerted authorities around 3:00 p.m. on Friday.

Upon inspecting the phone, one of the hikers discovered a distressing video showing a young woman, later identified as Grimwood, being swept away by the fierce water flow. The gravity of the situation prompted a swift response from rescue officials and the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Challenging Rescue Operation

Rescue teams, aided by a helicopter, located Grimwood trapped under trees in the water approximately 100 yards downstream from Horsetail Falls by 5:00 p.m. However, the treacherous conditions, exacerbated by heavy snowmelt runoff and steep rock walls, posed a significant challenge for the retrieval operation.

With nightfall approaching, authorities made the prudent decision to postpone the extraction until the following day to avoid unnecessary risks. Volunteers from Utah Search and Rescue vigilantly monitored the site overnight to ensure the victim’s safety.

By morning, the rescue teams successfully recovered Grimwood’s body from the water, which was subsequently transferred to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination.

The sheriff’s office expressed its heartfelt condolences to Grimwood’s family, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of all involved in the search and recovery mission.

Horsetail Falls Trail, situated in Alpine and approximately 35 miles south of Salt Lake City, serves as a popular hiking destination known for its scenic beauty and challenging terrain.
