During a dramatic opening statement on Tuesday morning, Franklin County Assistant Prosecutor Cory Helffrich left no doubt in the minds of the jury about the heinous nature of the crime committed by 35-year-old Timothy Kendrick. The trial, taking place at the county Common Pleas Court, will determine Kendrick’s guilt in the murder of 30-year-old Drew Mendelbaum, whose life came to a brutal end in July 2021.
Helffrich painted a chilling picture of the events that unfolded inside a hotel room on the city’s Northwest Side, where Kendrick spent several hours with Mendelbaum after striking up a conversation with him the day before. The prosecutor described how Kendrick allegedly tortured, mutilated, and dehumanized Mendelbaum, whose burned body was later found wrapped in a shower curtain and dumped outside an office park.
Contrary to any claims of self-defense or intoxication, Helffrich emphasized that the case revolves around the inhumane treatment one person can inflict upon another. Kendrick, represented by attorney Jeffrey Blosser, maintains his innocence and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by the prosecution.
Kendrick faces charges of aggravated murder, murder, tampering with evidence, kidnapping, and abuse of a corpse. The jury began hearing evidence on Tuesday, including testimony from the woman who discovered Mendelbaum’s body while cleaning an office building and the Columbus fire lieutenant who responded to the scene.
Lt. Jared Wadsworth recounted the harrowing discovery of Mendelbaum’s burnt and mutilated body, noting over 40 knife wounds and a severed throat. Kendrick’s trial is expected to last several days, with jurors set to watch videos recorded by the defendant on Snapchat that document his interactions with Mendelbaum leading up to the fatal incident.
