Accident – Death – Obituary News : A resident of Bunkie has been apprehended following the discovery of a deceased Pineville individual on a Red River levee last week, as reported by the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Chester Lee Sonnier Jr., aged 38, was taken into custody at the Rapides Parish Detention Center #1 on the evening of June 7, one day after the body of 58-year-old Gregory Gibbs was located on the levee near La. Highway 1 South close to Old River Road, according to an official statement.

Sonnier has been formally charged with second-degree murder and a violation of probation. While his bail for the homicide offence has been set at $1 million, he is currently being detained without bail for the probation violation, as per online detention records.

The body of Gibbs was found in close proximity to a parked truck near a tree line on privately owned land, the release disclosed. The investigation team is awaiting the determination of the cause of death.

Identification of the deceased was made possible through evidence gathered during the post-mortem examination, the release confirmed.

Detectives pinpointed Sonnier as a suspect based on evidence recovered from the crime scene and surveillance materials from local establishments. Following his arrest in Bunkie, he was processed at the Avoyelles Parish Detention Center before being transferred to Rapides Parish.
