A 20-year-old fisherman tragically lost his life after disappearing in a South Carolina creek, officials have confirmed.

The young man had been fishing on Long Branch Creek when he decided to “jump into the water to cool off,” as reported by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite attempts by bystanders to rescue him, the strong current swept him away, leading to his disappearance.

The sheriff’s office received a distress call at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, prompting a closure of Savannah Highway. The road was later reopened after the incident.

Search and rescue teams utilised a drone and sonar technology to locate the missing fisherman. Unfortunately, his lifeless body was discovered hours later by divers.

The deceased has been identified as Angel Gabriel Martin Vasquez from Guatemala. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office revealed on June 10 that the cause of death was “asphyxia due to drowning.”
