Accident – Death – Obituary News :

An Indian-origin man from Punjab’s Ludhiana was shot dead in Canada’s Surrey on Friday, 7th June.

On Saturday, the police arrested four individuals and charged them with first-degree murder in connection with the killing of Yuvraj Goyal.

Although early investigation indicates that Goyal’s death was the result of a targeted shooting, investigators say they are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the man’s tragic demise.

About Yuvraj Goyal

Hailing from a modest family in Ludhiana, Goyal migrated to Canada in 2019 on a student visa, as reported by NDTV.

The 28-year-old recently received his Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) status and had no prior criminal record.

According to the report, he was employed as a sales executive at Canada-based Basant Motors.

Goyal graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Delhi University, as per Hindustan Times.

Prior to moving to Canada, he had worked in India for approximately two years before pursuing a Master’s in finance in his new country.

His father, Rajesh Goyal, runs a firewood business, while his mother, Shakun Goyal, is a homemaker.

The murder

The incident took place on 7th June at 8:46 a.m., when a call regarding a shooting in Surrey, British Columbia’s 900-block of 164 Street was received by the Surrey Police.

Upon arrival, officers found Goyal deceased.

Shortly before he was shot outside his home, Goyal was reportedly on the phone with his mother, as stated in the Global News report.

“He came back from his gym, (his) daily routine, and he stepped out of his car and he was shot,” Goyal’s brother-in-law Bawandeap told Global News, adding, “He just had a chat with his mom about a minute or 30 seconds before he was shot. He stepped out of his car, said goodnight to his mom back in India, then he was shot.”

The four suspects arrested for Goyal’s murder are identified as Surrey residents Manvir Basram, 23, Sahib Basra, 20, Harkirat Jhutty, 23, and 20-year-old Keilon Francois from Ontario.

All four have been charged with first-degree murder as of Saturday.

The Surrey RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service, and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) worked closely with the Integrated Homicide Team (IHIT), who assumed control of the case.

In a statement, Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of Canada’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) stated, “We’re thankful for the hard work of the Surrey RCMP, Air 1 and IERT, but there is still more work to be done. IHIT investigators remain dedicated to determining why Goyal was the victim of this homicide.”

Though the circumstances surrounding Goyal’s murder are still under investigation, the case’s preliminary inquiry indicates that the shooting was targeted, he continued.

Additionally, the homicide squad has urged anyone with information about the incident or nearby drivers who may have dashcam evidence to come forward and contact the authorities.

A case of mistaken identity?

Goyal’s family, as reported by Hindustan Times, believes the murder could have been a case of mistaken identity.

“According to local sources in Canada, it might be a case of mistaken identity. Someone else might have been the target, but Yuvraj was killed. This needs to be thoroughly investigated,” Dr Ranjana Sood, a relative, was quoted as saying.

The victim’s inconsolable mother told The Indian Express, “He not only loved his home country (India) but was also a responsible citizen of Canada. The Canadian government must answer why he met this fate. How can someone brazenly kill an innocent man.”

“I don’t think anyone can give us justice. No one can bring our son back, but the Canadian government must understand that parents send their children to Canada with a lot of dreams, not to get their lifeless bodies back,” she said.
