PITT COUNTY, N.C. — A devastating accident on a North Carolina highway late Saturday night resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left two others injured. The driver of the vehicle, who initially survived the crash, tragically lost his life while attempting to stop traffic following the collision.
The incident, as reported by WNCT-TV, took place around 11:48 p.m. EDT, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Master Trooper Rico L. Stephens.
Suhziah Spruill, 22, of Snow Hill, North Carolina, was identified as the driver involved in the crash. Stephens stated that Spruill was traveling at a high speed on state highway 903 when he veered off the road and struck a guardrail, as reported by WITN-TV.
Unfortunately, five passengers in the vehicle were not wearing seat belts at the time of the collision and were ejected from the vehicle, resulting in three immediate fatalities. The two surviving passengers were rushed to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville with serious injuries, but they are expected to recover, according to WCTI-TV.
The deceased victims, all hailing from North Carolina, were identified as Nykwon Coppedge, 22, of Snow Hill; Zykhia Connor, 18, of Grifton; and Amoni Spruill, 20, of Farmville.
After the crash, Suhziah Spruill stepped out of his vehicle and entered the roadway in an effort to halt traffic. Tragically, he was struck by a Kia Forte and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that the driver of the Kia Forte, whose identity has not been disclosed, will not face charges in connection with the incident. An ongoing investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
