The Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall at Barishal University was the scene of a heartbreaking discovery as the body of a student was found in the reading room late on Sunday night. The student, identified as Shefa Nur Ibadi from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, was found hanging from the window grill with a shawl.
Abdur Rahman Mukul, the chief of the Bandar Police Station, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that the young student was rushed to Barishal’s Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by doctors.
According to OC Mukul, it is suspected that Shefa took her own life, although the exact reason behind her decision remains unclear. Reports from fellow students suggest that Shefa had been involved in protests against the university’s quota system earlier that day.
One student, speaking to bdnews24.com, claimed that Shefa had been distraught over a relationship issue and had taken her life while on a video call with her partner. However, the authorities are yet to find her mobile phone to verify this account.
Dr Hena Rani Biswas, the principal of the hall, described Shefa as a passionate individual who may have been driven to suicide due to a love affair. The university’s acting proctor, Dr Abdul Qayyum, expressed his condolences and announced plans to enhance counselling and support services for students to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Despite the efforts to provide mental health support, the untimely death of Shefa Nur Ibadi has shocked the university community. The authorities are completing the necessary formalities before handing over her body to her grieving family.
