The incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, May 28, when two officers on patrol pulled over a man on a bicycle for traffic violations in the vicinity of 10th Street and Southern Avenue. The suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Sergio Francisco Alvarez, allegedly became combative as soon as the officers approached him.

As the officers attempted to detain Alvarez, a struggle ensued, causing both officers’ body-worn cameras to be dislodged. Despite the limited visibility in the footage, it is apparent that Alvarez resisted arrest and eventually drew a handgun, shooting one of the officers in the leg.

Following the gunfire, additional officers arrived at the scene to assist in subduing Alvarez. The wounded officer was promptly taken to a nearby hospital in serious but stable condition, while Alvarez succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital.

It has been disclosed that the officers involved in the altercation are part of the South Mountain Precinct and collectively possess around three years of service in the police force.
