In a tragic incident in Sitio Buyoron, Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, a 32-year-old barangay tanod was killed and his 12-year-old relative was wounded in a gun attack on Friday, June 7.
The victim, identified as Rogelio Ariola of Barangay Mahalang, was on board a bulldozer with the minor when two unidentified individuals suddenly appeared and opened fire on them. The minor managed to jump off the vehicle but sustained an injury to his right arm.
Despite being hit, the gunmen relentlessly shot Ariola multiple times before fleeing the scene. Tragically, Ariola succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family and community.
Upon investigation, authorities recovered several empty shells of an AK47 firearm at the crime scene, indicating the use of high-powered weaponry in the attack. Police Lt. Col. Anthony Grande, Himamaylan police chief, disclosed that Ariola was assigned to oversee a road project in Barangay Buenavista, suggesting a possible motive linked to his duties.
While the child sustained minor injuries and has since been discharged from the hospital, the authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
