A York man has been arrested after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop with children inside his vehicle on Saturday night, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began when a sergeant with the sheriff’s office attempted to pull over the driver of an SUV near the intersection of West 22nd Street and North Division Avenue at 11 p.m. The driver failed to stop for multiple traffic violations, leading to a pursuit.
The SUV driver continued southbound on North Division Avenue before finally coming to a stop near West 7th Street and North Lincoln Avenue. The driver, identified as 36-year-old Randy Kermoade, was taken into custody without further incident.
Upon arresting Kermoade, authorities discovered two children in the backseat of the vehicle. It was determined that neither child was wearing a seatbelt during the pursuit, but fortunately, both were unharmed.
Sergeant Taylor Samek stated that one of the children was returned to a parent, while the other child was placed in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Kermoade now faces multiple charges including child abuse, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, no proof of insurance, driving under suspension, willful reckless driving, vehicle lighting violation, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, seatbelt violation, stop sign violation, driving left of center, failure to signal, and speeding.
