PUDUCHERRY: A team of surgeons at Mahatma Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences (MGPGIDS) in Puducherry successfully saved the life of a 14-year-old boy by performing a surgical procedure to remove a toothbrush that was lodged in his throat. The incident occurred when the boy, identified as R Deebesh from Kiliyanur in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, was playfully patted on the back of his head by his brother while brushing his teeth.
Deebesh was rushed to the institute in a critical condition, struggling to breathe, after the toothbrush became stuck in his throat. Under the guidance of MGPGIDS dean, Dr S P K Kennedy Babu, and head of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr K Shankar, a team of doctors carried out a complex explorative surgical procedure lasting about 45 minutes to safely extract the toothbrush on June 8.
“The toothbrush had made its way deep into the boy’s throat when his brother playfully tapped him on the head during his brushing routine. Deebesh was brought to us in a life-threatening state, gasping for breath. We acted swiftly and performed an emergency surgery to successfully remove the toothbrush without causing any harm. The boy showed rapid recovery post-surgery and was discharged on the same day,” explained Dr Babu.
Dr Babu also cautioned the public against engaging in activities like brushing while driving, talking on the phone, or playing, to avoid such freak accidents. He emphasized the importance of using essential tools like toothbrushes with caution to prevent any potential injuries.
It is crucial to remain vigilant and prioritize safety while carrying out daily tasks to avoid unforeseen mishaps like the one experienced by Deebesh. The timely intervention and expertise of the medical team at MGPGIDS played a pivotal role in ensuring the successful outcome of this challenging medical emergency.
