QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (KTVK/KPHO/Gray News) – A 4-year-old girl from Arizona tragically passed away in her parents’ arms at the hospital the day after sustaining critical injuries in a car crash involving an alleged drunk driver.
Lily Moster, 4, is being fondly remembered as a bright ray of sunshine. Her untimely death in a multi-vehicle collision has left a significant void in the hearts of all who knew her, according to a report by Arizona’s Family.
A Heartbreaking Loss
“She’s a treasure to the family. She’s just a sweet little spitfire,” expressed Lily’s grandfather, Dan Smith.
Smith shared that the entire family is struggling to come to terms with the loss of the 4-year-old.
“Dad feels guilt for no reason at all. It’s not his blame, but they’re struggling,” Smith explained. “Just slowly settling in when Momma comes home from the hospital the first time and Lily’s not there, that was a heartbreaking moment.”
Tragic Circumstances
Lily’s father, Daniel Moster, was driving the young girl and her 6-year-old brother, Luke, back home from swim lessons on Wednesday, as per Smith. The two children were securely seated in the back of the vehicle in their car seats.
Officials in Queen Creek stated that Moster had come to a stop at a junction around 11:30 a.m. when his minivan was forcefully struck from behind by a driver in a black Jeep Wrangler travelling at nearly 60 miles per hour. Footage from the scene depicted extensive damage to the rear of the minivan.
“Dad mentioned that he was initially feeling dizzy and disoriented. Upon regaining his bearings, he promptly went to extract the kids from the car. A passerby actually reached the children first, releasing them from their seatbelts and getting Lily’s brother out. Lily, unfortunately, was unconscious,” shared Smith.
While Lily’s brother and father escaped serious harm in the collision, the 4-year-old was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Tragically, she passed away on Thursday night in her parents’ embrace.
“It was a poignant moment. All the medical apparatus was removed, allowing Mum and Dad to cradle her like a baby. They wept and held her close as she passed,” recounted Smith.
The grandfather emphasised that Lily and her brother shared a special bond.
“They were inseparable. She looked up to her brother,” Smith stated. “When her brother’s favourite colour became red, suddenly, her favourite colour was red too.”
The Mosters expressed their gratitude for the strangers who intervened at the scene. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist the family with Lily’s medical expenses and now, her funeral arrangements.
“She will be greatly missed, but she will live on in our hearts,” affirmed Smith. “They are holding onto Luke tightly because he is all they have left.”
Investigation and Arrest
Authorities have named the driver of the Jeep Wrangler as 33-year-old Jason Sanchez. It was reported that he did not make any attempt to brake before the collision and was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.111, nearly 1.5 times the legal limit.
Court documents revealed that Sanchez allegedly confessed to consuming three or four beers at San Tan Mountain Casino, where he had been heading home from.
Sanchez was taken into custody on the day of the crash and faces charges of aggravated assault and driving under the influence. With Lily tragically not surviving, he now also faces a second-degree murder charge.
Sanchez’s bail has been set at £100,000.
