The City of Akron in Ohio recently held a press conference following a tragic mass shooting that occurred at a house party on June 2. Akron Police Chief Brian Harding confirmed during the press conference that a 36-year-old woman has been identified as the 28th victim of the shooting. According to Chief Harding, the woman sustained minor injuries as three bullets grazed her arm during the violent incident.

Details of the Shooting

The shooting took place shortly after midnight on June 2 near the intersection of Kelly and 8th avenues in Akron. Approximately 200 individuals had gathered at the residence of Darshawn Spragling, also known as “Boo Sprag,” for a birthday celebration. Spragling, a well-respected figure in the community, is known for his active involvement in community activities.

Tragically, 27-year-old Akron resident Lateris Cook, a father of four, was fatally shot during the incident. Additionally, 27 other individuals sustained injuries, with two individuals still in critical condition, as confirmed by Akron Police Chief Brian Harding.

Police investigations revealed the recovery of 45 shell casings from at least five different firearms at the scene. It was also disclosed that at least one party attendee retaliated by returning fire during the chaotic event.

Creation of the Gun Violence Response Fund

In response to the tragic events of June 2, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced the establishment of the Gun Violence Response Fund. The fund, created in collaboration with various community organisations, aims to provide support to the victims affected by the mass shooting incident on Kelly Avenue.

The Gun Violence Response Fund is a joint initiative by the City of Akron, Akron Community Foundation, and Victim Assistance Program Inc. Initial funding for the fund is being provided by Akron Community Foundation and United Way of Summit & Medina, each contributing $25,000. Furthermore, the City of Akron is seeking approval from the City Council for an additional $150,000 in initial funding, as per a press release issued by the city.

Donations towards the fund are currently being accepted, with individuals encouraged to contribute any amount they can afford. Mayor Malik emphasised the importance of community support in aiding the victims of gun violence, highlighting that every donation, regardless of size, will make a significant impact.
