Georgia couple narrowly escapes shark encounter at Panama City Beach
A couple from Georgia had a terrifying experience at Panama City Beach when they encountered a shark just days after a series of shark attacks in the area. Robert Cross, from Lawrenceville, captured the moment on video as Jeremy and Leslie from Monroe, Georgia, hurried out of the water with a shark circling dangerously close to them.
Cross described the shark as a hammerhead, which appeared to be going after a fish near the couple. The incident took place on the private beach of Fountainbleau Terrace, where the shark lingered in the shallow water near the shore for several minutes before swimming away.
Following the incident, Cross reported the encounter to the local wildlife department for further investigation.
Recent shark attacks in Walton County
The encounter at Panama City Beach comes in the wake of two separate shark attacks in Walton County. On Friday, a 45-year-old woman was injured at Watersound Way, sustaining significant trauma to her mid-section and pelvic area, as well as the amputation of her left lower arm. The victim, identified as Elisabeth Foley from Virginia, was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
Shortly after, emergency crews responded to a second incident at Seacrest Beach, where two teenage girls, aged between 15 and 17, were attacked by a shark. One of the girls suffered severe injuries to her hand and leg, requiring amputation, while the other sustained flesh wounds to her foot. Both girls were transported to the hospital, with one in critical condition.
The mother of one of the teenage girls, 15-year-old Lulu Gribbin, shared that her daughter remained conscious after the attack, bravely stating, “I made it.”
Safety precautions in Walton County
In response to the recent shark incidents, beaches in Walton County have raised purple flags to warn visitors of potential dangers posed by marine life. Authorities are investigating the incidents to determine if the same shark was responsible for all the attacks and sightings in the area.
