Authorities in Conneaut, Ohio have resumed their search for a missing 10-year-old boy, identified as Hunter, after the US Coast Guard had initially suspended their efforts on Sunday. The search, which had begun on Saturday, has now shifted to a recovery mission as hopes of finding the young boy alive diminish.
School District Mourns Loss
Springfield Local Schools in Ohio, where Hunter was set to begin sixth grade in the fall, shared a heartfelt post on Facebook expressing their grief over the tragic incident. The school district has arranged for grief counselors and support dogs to be available to staff and students at Schrop Intermediate School to help them cope with the loss.
Recovery Operations Underway
City manager of Conneaut, Nicholas Sanford, revealed that the search for Hunter began on Friday afternoon after he was reported missing at Conneaut Beach. Local authorities, along with the US Coast Guard, have been tirelessly searching for the boy, with additional support from underwater dive teams and search and rescue dogs.
The USCG Great Lakes, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed that multiple agencies, including the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Coast Guard STAs Erie/Fairport and AIRSTA Detroit, are aiding in the recovery efforts. The search was temporarily halted on Friday night and is set to resume on Saturday morning.
Warnings of Dangerous Conditions
The National Weather Service had issued warnings about strong rip currents along Lake Erie beaches, including Conneaut Beach, from Thursday to Saturday. Beachgoers were advised to avoid entering the water due to the hazardous conditions.
In light of the tragic incident, Sanford expressed the city’s condolences to Hunter’s family and highlighted the support being provided by the Ashtabula County crisis response team and clergy members from the City of Conneaut.
