‘Release Imran Khan’: Who Organised Airborne ‘Campaign’ During Ind Vs Pak T20 Match | Image:X
New Delhi: Amid the action-packed T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York on Sunday, a plane carrying a banner in support of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was spotted flying over the venue.
High above the stadium, the banner advocating for the release of Imran Khan captured the attention of onlookers.
The message calling for the release of Imran Khan was prominently displayed as the aircraft circled above the stadium.
The Nassau stadium in New York is one of the three venues in the USA hosting matches for the highly-anticipated Group A fixture of the T20 World Cup 2024 between the arch-rivals. The US is co-hosting the ongoing tournament alongside the West Indies.
The footage of the airborne pro-Imran message during a rain delay in the match has garnered significant attention on various social media platforms.
Subsequently, the official Twitter handle of Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), shared an image of the flying banner, reiterating the demand for the former premier’s release. “Release Imran Khan,” PTI’s tweet read.
Planned Overseas Pro-Imran Protest?
Following the incident, a man named Ghaazi Khan took to X to reveal that he was part of the orchestrated ‘Aerial Messaging campaign’ in support of Imran Khan. Expressing his solidarity with Imran, Ghaazi thanked his fellow team members.
Ghaazi Khan, who goes by the username @junaidkj, tweeted, “It was an honour to be involved in the Aerial Messaging campaign #ReleaseImranKhan during the India vs. Pakistan cricket match. The ideology of @ImranKhanPTI cannot be suppressed or forgotten. Overseas Pakistanis stand with Imran Khan and always will. Thanks to @MalikUs64816178, @FirstPakGlobal, @akhan4pakistan, and Zeeshan from New Jersey for their leadership and collaboration on this fantastic initiative to showcase our love for Pakistan and Imran Khan.”
Ghaazi’s post indicated that the airborne demonstration was a protest by overseas Pakistanis against Imran’s incarceration. Ghaazi, a Cyber Security Professional, also shared images from the pilot’s cockpit who was operating the ‘Release Imran Khan’ banner.
In a separate post, a video featuring a group of individuals, including Atif Khan (a former Member of Prime Minister Task Force during PTI government in Pakistan), surfaced on X where Atif can be seen expressing his gratitude towards his team members who conceived the idea for such a protest.
Legal Troubles for Imran Khan
A former cricketing legend turned Islamist politician, Imran Khan served as Prime Minister from 2018 until his ousting in 2022. Khan, who is entangled in multiple legal cases, has been serving a prison sentence since August last year.
The 71-year-old PTI leader was convicted in the Toshakhana corruption case last year, leading to his arrest. He was found guilty of corruption for accepting gifts during his tenure as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. While his 14-year sentence was suspended in April, the conviction remains in place.
Both Khan and his third wife, Bushra, are currently serving jail terms following a court ruling that their marriage in 2018 was unlawful, being too soon after her divorce.
