An unfortunate incident occurred in Anchorage’s Spenard neighborhood on Saturday morning, as a man was struck and severely injured by a passing train, according to a report from the Alaska Railroad.

The incident took place at Milepost 111.4 on the Alaska Railroad’s main line at approximately 4:30 a.m. when a southbound empty passenger train collided with the man. The location of the incident was north of the railroad crossing on West 36th Avenue in Spenard.

As of Sunday, the man’s identity remains unknown, but he was about 500 feet away from the nearest crossing when the accident occurred, as stated by railroad officials.

The man sustained life-threatening injuries and was promptly transported to the hospital, according to an Anchorage police spokesperson.

Alaska Railroad spokeswoman Meghan Clemens confirmed on Sunday morning that the man was still under medical care, although specific details regarding his condition and the circumstances of the incident have not yet been disclosed.

The passenger train was en route from Anchorage to Whittier to cater to cruise ship passengers at the time of the accident.

In light of this incident, the Alaska Railroad emphasized the dangers of trespassing in the railroad right-of-way.

“As an active rail transportation corridor, the track right-of-way — extending 100 feet on either side of the tracks — is strictly off-limits to the public,” the statement from the railroad cautioned.
