Twelve of the victims were treated for minor injuries and heat-related illnesses at University Hospital, while one remains hospitalized for dehydration and cardiac-related issues. The migrants hail from Mexico, Honduras, Venezuela, and Guatemala.
The Sheriff’s Office seized several vehicles driven by the suspects on the property. U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is assisting with the investigation, but declined to comment on the suspects’ immigration status.
Authorities discovered multiple bulletproof vests and long rifles at the scene, leading Sheriff Javier Salazar to believe the operation was cartel-related. The sheriff described the smuggling operation as “big money,” with one Guatemalan woman reportedly paying $16,000 to be smuggled into the U.S.
