Authorities in Dhaka have apprehended a Chinese man and his Bangladeshi wife on charges of human trafficking, promising a better life in China to their victims. The arrests were made following a rescue operation that saved three teenage girls and two young men, who were believed to have been lured by the suspects.
The 34-year-old Chinese man, Xiao Suiwe, was taken into custody along with his wife, Sumi Chakma Heli, whose age remains undisclosed. The operation was carried out in Uttara on Saturday, where the victims were found after two girls had gone missing in Khagrachhari earlier in the month.
According to Mukta Dhar, the superintendent of police in Khagrachhari district, the families of the missing girls had filed complaints, leading to a search operation. The police were able to track the victims to a luxury flat in the Horizontal apartment building in Uttara-12, where they were being held.
After the rescue operation, the three teenage girls and two young men were taken into custody. The individuals were from Rangamati and were handed over to the local police for further investigation. Meanwhile, efforts are still ongoing to locate and apprehend Sumi, who was later found in Bashundhara.
Following the arrests, Xiao Suiwe was presented in front of the Khagrachhari Judicial Magistrate’s Court for further legal proceedings. The authorities are working diligently to ensure that justice is served and that the victims receive the necessary support and protection.
