Accident – Death – Obituary News :

IMPHAL: The situation in Manipur’s Jiribam district remained tense but under control on Sunday, after suspected militants set fire to two police outposts and at least 70 houses in a fresh wave of violence in the state, police reported. Additional security forces have been deployed in the affected areas following the incident on Saturday.

Violent Disturbances in Jiribam

“The situation is tense but under control in the wake of violent disturbances that broke out in Jiribam district, where miscreants torched two police pickets, a forest beat office, and several houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities,” the Manipur Police stated in a release.

More than 70 houses were set ablaze in Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra villages, according to a senior police officer.

“Police are actively monitoring social media updates that may incite communal feelings among the communities and urge the general public to refrain from spreading unfounded or unverified information,” the statement added.

Escalation of Violence

Violence erupted in Jiribam in the ethnically divided state on Thursday evening, after suspected militants killed a 59-year-old man. Soibam Saratkumar Singh, who went missing after visiting his farm on June 6, was found dead with sharp object wounds.

On Saturday, an angry mob intercepted a truck at Sorok Atingbi Khunou and reportedly set fire to essential commodities it was transporting, as per a police official.

A team of over 70 state police commandos was flown in from Imphal to Jiribam to support security forces in their operations against militants, the official added.

Evacuation and Relief Efforts

Approximately 239 Meitei individuals, predominantly women and children, were evacuated from peripheral areas of Jiribam on Friday and relocated to a newly established relief camp at a multi-sports complex in the district, officials confirmed.

In response to the recent violence, newly elected Congress MP from the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, urged the Manipur government to safeguard the lives and properties of Jiribam residents.

Ethnic Strife in Manipur

Jiribam, home to a diverse mix of Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and non-Manipuris, had previously been unaffected by the ethnic conflict that has plagued the northeastern state since last year. The conflict between Imphal valley-based Meiteis and hill-based Kukis has resulted in over 200 casualties and displaced thousands.

As the situation in Jiribam remains volatile, authorities are working to restore peace and security in the region while ensuring the safety of all residents.
