Accident – Death – Obituary News :

(CNN) — When it comes to keeping children safe in the water, the color of their swimsuit can play a crucial role. Water safety experts have highlighted the importance of choosing bright and contrasting colors for children’s swimwear to enhance visibility in pools and at the beach.

According to Bernard Fisher, director of health and safety for the American Lifeguard Association, the choice of swimsuit color can significantly impact a child’s visibility in the water, which is essential for preventing drownings. Bright colors such as neon yellow, orange, pink, and bright red are recommended as they stand out clearly against the water, making it easier for lifeguards and parents to spot a child quickly, especially in emergency situations.

Wyatt Werneth, a coastal lifeguard in Florida and spokesperson for the American Lifeguard Association, emphasised the importance of bright swimsuit colors in improving visibility. He mentioned that bright clothing can be a game-changer in spotting children in the water, especially in cases of missing children.

Swimsuit Color Test Results

Alive Solutions, a company specialising in water safety, conducted experiments to determine the visibility of different swimsuit colors in swimming pools and open water environments. The tests revealed that neon colors such as pink, orange, yellow, and green were the most visible against both pool and lake bottoms.

Natalie Livingston, co-founder of Alive Solutions and a veteran lifeguard, highlighted the importance of swimsuit color in enhancing visibility in water environments. She mentioned that light-colored swimsuits, especially white and light blue, tend to blend in with the water, making them less visible in case of emergencies.

Overall, neon colors were found to be the most visible in all environments, making them a preferred choice for ensuring child safety in the water.

Importance of Water Safety Layers

While bright swimsuit colors can improve visibility, Dr. Maneesha Agarwal, an associate professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine, emphasised the need for multiple layers of water safety to prevent drowning incidents. She highlighted the importance of swim lessons, parental supervision, and swift emergency response in ensuring child safety in the water.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidental drowning rates have been on the rise in the United States, with children aged 1-4 years being at high risk. Participating in formal swimming lessons has been associated with an 88% reduced risk of drowning in young children, making it a crucial aspect of water safety.

Chris DeJong, founder of Big Blue Swim School, reiterated the importance of swim lessons as a key tool in preventing drownings. He recommended starting swim lessons at an early age to build water competence and familiarity with emergency procedures.

In conclusion, while the color of a child’s swimsuit can enhance visibility in the water, it should be accompanied by a comprehensive approach to water safety, including swim lessons, supervision, and emergency preparedness.
