A mother of three from Glen Allen, Virginia, is currently hospitalized in Florida after a terrifying shark attack in Walton County. The incident took place on Friday afternoon when authorities received a distressing report of a woman being injured by a shark while swimming in the water.
Fire Chief Ryan Crawford of the South Walton Fire District provided details of the incident, stating, “We had a 45-year-old female patient, who was reportedly swimming with her husband just beyond the first sandbar. She sustained significant trauma to the midsection and pelvic area, as well as an amputation to her left lower arm.”
The victim, identified as Elisabeth Foley, was vacationing with her husband at the time of the attack. The shocking event was witnessed by beachgoers, including Charlie Smith, who described the scene as alarming and distressing.
Foley is one of three individuals who were injured in two separate shark attacks that occurred at neighbouring Florida beaches within just 90 minutes of each other. In the second attack, two teenage girls also suffered injuries, with one sustaining significant wounds to her upper leg and hand, while the other had minor injuries on her foot.
Following the attacks, temporary beach closures were implemented as a precautionary measure. Despite the rarity of shark attacks on humans, local authorities emphasised the importance of exercising caution and prudent behaviour while enjoying beach activities.
Sheriff Mike Atkinson of Walton County, Florida, commented on the unusual occurrence, stating, “It is rare, exceedingly rare to have three victims in one day. We understand that, but we need to ensure that we use good judgement and exercise prudence in our actions. Temporary beach closures are necessary, but prolonged closures are not warranted.”
In response to the tragic incident, Foley’s church, Winn’s Baptist, has launched an online fundraiser with the objective of raising $25,000 to assist with covering medical expenses and logistical arrangements during her recovery.
