Accident – Death – Obituary News : Federal prosecutors have taken over a case involving the tragic 2021 murder of National Guardsman Chrys Carvajal in Chicago, after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office declined to press charges against a gang member implicated in the killing.

Carvajal, a 19-year-old National Guardsman, was spending time with his family during Fourth of July celebrations in 2021 on the city’s Northwest Side when the fatal incident occurred. According to a report by CWB Chicago, law enforcement officials had urged for charges to be filed in the case, but prosecutors cited insufficient evidence and requested further proof before proceeding with legal action. Consequently, no one was ever charged in connection with Carvajal’s murder.

Carvajal’s sister, Jennifer Ramirez, expressed her family’s anguish following the tragic loss, stating, “He was off serving and protecting our country. And for him to come home and not even a month of him being home, you killed my brother, and my family is broken. Our hearts are broken forever.”

In a significant development, federal prosecutors have now taken up the case, announcing charges against two Milwaukee Kings gang members for racketeering and murder in relation to Carvajal’s death. The indictment alleges that the suspects, Gary Roberson, 40, and Joseph Matos, 41, both of Chicago, orchestrated Carvajal’s murder on July 3, 2021, as a means of maintaining and advancing their positions within the Milwaukee Kings street gang. Carvajal was fatally shot in the Belmont Cragin neighbourhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

The United States Attorney’s Office Northern District of Illinois revealed that Roberson, who was arrested last month, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains in federal custody pending trial. Matos, on the other hand, is currently at large, with an arrest warrant issued against him.

If convicted of the murder linked to racketeering, the defendants could face life imprisonment or potentially even the death penalty. The involvement of federal prosecutors marks a significant step towards seeking justice for Carvajal and his grieving family.

The case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in prosecuting gang-related crimes and underscores the importance of collaboration between local and federal authorities in addressing such complex criminal cases. The pursuit of justice for Chrys Carvajal serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve in the National Guard and the duty of the legal system to hold perpetrators of violence to account..
