LAKE CITY, Fla. — Two individuals are currently recovering from injuries sustained during a shooting incident that led to an extended standoff with law enforcement on Saturday evening, as reported by the Lake City Police Department.

Incident Details

According to a statement released by the Lake City police, the incident unfolded around 8:05 p.m. when officers were called to NW Wilson Street in response to a reported shooting.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement discovered one victim who had been shot in the stomach. While emergency medical technicians were attending to the first victim, a second individual who had also been shot was located.

The suspect, identified as Brooks Smith, immediately retreated back inside the residence on the property post the shooting.

Law Enforcement Response

Police officers swiftly established a perimeter around the property and requested the assistance of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team.

SWAT negotiators successfully established communication with the suspect, 40-year-old Smith, who exhibited aggressive behavior towards law enforcement officers and even fired shots from inside the residence.

After a five-hour-long standoff, Smith was eventually taken into custody. He was then transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation before being booked into the Columbia County Detention Center.

As per the latest updates from the police department, Smith is currently facing two counts of attempted homicide in connection with the shooting incident.

In addition to the Lake City Police Department and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, various other law enforcement agencies including the Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Law Enforcement Division, Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, Lake City Fire Department, and Columbia County Fire Department also provided assistance during the incident.
