The Lake Zurich community was left in shock after a devastating explosion tore through a home in the 23500 block of North Overhill Drive, resulting in the tragic death of a 77-year-old man. The deceased, identified as Timothy Toczylowski, had lived in the house for over two decades, according to tax records.

Identification and Autopsy Results

The Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner confirmed that the body recovered from the rubble belonged to Toczylowski after conducting a dental examination and comparing it with the deceased’s records. The autopsy revealed injuries consistent with inhalation of combustion products, with toxicology results still pending.

Neighborhood Remembers a Friendly Resident

Neighbours fondly recalled Toczylowski as a friendly and nice person who had been a long-time resident of the area. Ulises Hernandez, a resident living nearby, described the deceased as a kind individual who was known for his friendly gestures and interactions with the community.

Flowers were laid against the fencing surrounding the destroyed home as a tribute to Toczylowski, with one child expressing, “He was a good man,” reflecting the sentiment of the neighbourhood.

Witness Account of the Explosion

Hernandez, whose home surveillance camera captured the moment of the explosion, recounted the harrowing experience of hearing a loud bang that shook his house. He immediately checked on his children playing outside, ensuring their safety amidst the chaos caused by the blast.

Emergency services were swiftly summoned to the scene, where firefighters found the house engulfed in flames, leading to its complete destruction and damage to neighbouring properties.

Response and Investigation

The Lake Zurich Fire Department, along with several neighbouring fire districts, responded to the incident, with the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System activated to provide additional support. The cause of the explosion is under investigation by authorities, with efforts to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic event.

As the community mourns the loss of a beloved resident, the investigation into the explosion continues, emphasising the need for thorough examination to prevent similar incidents in the future.
