A resident of northern Iredell County and a juvenile are facing multiple charges in connection with the theft of two vehicles and several car break-ins, according to Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell.
According to Campbell, ICSO deputies responded to a residence in the Troutman area in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 2, after a report of a stolen vehicle from the caller’s driveway. Deputies then spotted the stolen vehicle being driven through downtown Statesville shortly after.
The driver of the stolen vehicle refused to stop when deputies attempted to pull them over, leading to a brief pursuit before crashing the vehicle and fleeing on foot, evading arrest, Campbell explained.
Subsequent reports of car break-ins in northern Iredell County and Troutman, as well as the theft of a second vehicle, led ICSO criminal investigators to identify a 15-year-old male as the primary suspect responsible for the crimes, with Steven Michael Potts implicated as his accomplice.
Potts was apprehended on Thursday, June 6, after arrest warrants were issued, and subsequent interviews with both suspects led to the recovery of the second stolen vehicle in northern Iredell County.
Potts now faces charges including two counts of felony Larceny of Motor Vehicle, seven counts of felony Breaking or Entering a Motor Vehicle, and several misdemeanors, totaling a $55,000 secured bond at the Iredell County Detention Center.
Meanwhile, the 15-year-old suspect is facing charges through the Department of Juvenile Justice, including felony Larceny of Motor Vehicle, Breaking or Entering a Motor Vehicle, Fleeing to Elude Arrest, Larceny of a Firearm, Attempted Breaking or Entering of a Motor Vehicle, and various traffic offenses.
As the investigation continues, Campbell highlighted that additional charges may be pending as more details emerge.
