CHENNAI: A tragic incident occurred in West Mambalam, where a 29-year-old man, S Augustine Paul, was electrocuted while hanging up lights to celebrate his wife’s birthday. The couple, who had been married for only eight months, had planned a small celebration at their residence in Brindavan Nagar. Augustine, who owned a packers and movers company, had decorated the entire house for the occasion.
According to the Ashok Nagar police, the incident took place around 6:30 pm when Augustine was hanging up serial lights in one of the rooms. It is suspected that he accidentally touched a live wire while connecting the lights, leading to the electrocution. His wife, A Keerthi, witnessed the incident and attempted to help him, but also felt a mild shock. The neighbours were alerted, and the main electric supply to the house was shut down.
Despite the prompt response, Augustine was declared brought dead at a nearby hospital. The Ashok Nagar police have registered a case of unnatural death and the body has been sent for postmortem at ESI Hospital in KK Nagar.

- Electrical works should be carried out by qualified and licensed contractors.
- Use ISI-certified electrical appliances, cables, and wires.
- Switch off the power supply before inserting or removing plugs.
- Replace damaged switches and plug sockets promptly.
- Avoid laying cable TV wires near electrical lines.
- Ensure electrodes in appliances are properly connected to earth terminals.
- Do not install switches in wet areas like bathrooms.
- Contact Tangedco if you notice any damaged electrical cables.
- In case of a short circuit or fire, switch off the mains immediately.
- Avoid standing near open windows or doors during thunderstorms.

In a separate incident in Kasimedu, a 54-year-old man named Seetharaman was electrocuted when he touched a street light pole on a waterlogged road. The police suspect a current leak to be the cause of the electrocution.
Another tragic incident occurred at an under-construction private crematorium in Mogappair, where a 30-year-old supervisor named Veerabadhran died after coming in contact with a live wire. He accidentally touched the wire while climbing to the first floor and suffered fatal injuries. The Ambattur Industrial Estate police have registered a case in this regard.
