A fresh development has emerged in the tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of Arlington police officer Darrin McMichael back in September 2023. The Dallas County Sheriff, Marian Brown, has confirmed the arrest of a new suspect in connection to the case.
The latest arrest involves 22-year-old Ryan Luckett, who was apprehended in Jackson, Mississippi. Sheriff Brown has announced that Luckett will be transferred to Dallas County to face charges related to the hit-and-run incident.
This arrest comes after a previous suspect, a 26-year-old man, was taken into custody in Jackson, Mississippi by the U.S. Marshals Task Force. However, the charges against the initial suspect were dropped, leading to the pursuit and arrest of Luckett.
Officer Darrin McMichael tragically lost his life on the morning of September 21, 2023, when he was struck and run over by a vehicle on Interstate 20. McMichael had served with the Arlington Police Department for 24 years, spending 13 years in the motorcycle unit, in addition to working as a patrol officer and detective in the north patrol district.
Investigations into the hit-and-run incident pointed towards Luckett as a suspect, leading to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest. At the time the warrant was issued, Luckett was already in custody at the Hinds County Jail in Jackson due to parole violations.
While Sheriff Brown did not disclose the specifics of how Luckett was identified as a suspect, she mentioned that Luckett and the initially arrested individual were acquainted. Luckett has since been transferred to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office placing a detainer on him pending release.
